Negotiating fees for music for a wedding or figuring budgets based on union scale do not require extensive negotiating skills. It is what it is, more or less. However, if you have to negotiate an orchestra contract, or the terms of a new job that you have been offered, it can get dicey. It’s important that you recognize the other side’s point of view and understand it. But that doesn’t mean that you must agree with it. I’ve been known to say something like, “I understand why you are proposing that, but look at it from our point of view. This just won’t work for us. We have . . .”
